The Malaysian Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has today outlined its key priorities and strategic direction for strengthening the nation’s defence posture from 2026 to 2030, with particular focus on regional security in the South China SeaĀ and the development of a resilient domestic defence industry.

Delivered live from Dewan Perkasa, Wisma Perwira of the Malaysian Armed Forces, the address highlights MINDEF’s commitment to enhancing national security, cultivating local defence capabilities, and improving welfare programmes for military personnel and veterans.

During the presentation, MINDEF emphasised the importance of addressing security challenges in the South China Sea through measured diplomacy while advancing the National Defence Industry PolicyĀ to reduce dependency on foreign sources.

Under the 2026 Defence Budget, a total of RM21.74 billionĀ has been allocated, marking a 2.92% increaseĀ from the previous year, including RM6 billionĀ dedicated to the acquisition of new defence assets. The ministry indicated that modern systems—including fighter aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), patrol vessels, and air defence platforms—are expected to be received throughout the year.

The address also highlighted the adoption of a whole-of-government and whole-of-societyĀ defence approach, supported by initiatives such as the WAGOS Pilot ModelĀ in Pulau Banggi, Sabah, which integrates security planning with community development.

Welfare initiatives for service members were also announced, including RM426.4 millionĀ for family housing and RM50 millionĀ for maintenance projects, as well as expanded economic programmes and Work-Based LearningĀ opportunities to recognise the skills of Armed Forces personnel.

In support of veterans, the ministry highlighted a RM303.3 millionĀ allocation for veteran welfare, capacity building, and socio-economic initiatives, including strategic collaborations aimed at enhancing training and employment opportunities.

The launch of the National Defence Strategic Plan 2026–2030Ā and the accompanying Defence Capability RoadmapĀ underscores the ministry’s efforts to ensure a responsive and future-oriented defence transformation, aligned with national policy frameworks.

Speaking on the role of defence service, the Minister reaffirmed that service in the Malaysian Armed Forces and public defence institutions calls for deep commitment, patriotism and sacrifice—attributes central to safeguarding the nation.
